Plant Power for Low-Income Women at MicroSkills: Info Session Tomorrow

Hello Everyone,
We are pleased to announce the start of the application process for the Horticulture Technician Pre-apprenticeship Program offered by MicroSkills, in partnership with Humber College and Landscape Ontario.
This full-time program starts in September 2014 and finishes in June 2015.  The program includes 27 weeks of academic training at Humber College and 10 weeks of paid work placement with employers within the Horticulture and Landscape Industry.
The Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program helps potential entrants to the apprenticeship system develop their job skills and trade readiness so that they will be prepared to find work as apprentices. The Program also includes trade readiness, employment preparation and academic upgrading.
           
The Eligibility Criteria is the following:
•          English proficiency at CLB Level 5+
•          High School Diploma or Equivalent
•          Unemployed or under-employed
•          A low income woman
•          Interest in landscape trades and a strong desire for employment in this industry
Employment in this industry includes landscape construction, grounds and golf course maintenance, parks operations, nursery, greenhouse and garden center operations. Program provides both academic and practical training to prepare students for employment.

This program includes:
•              Level 1 (Basic) in-school training program for the trade of Horticultural Technician in Ontario;
•              Employment preparation training;
•              Safety training including WHMIS, worker safety and First Aid;
o             Practical trade readiness training;
o             Paid work placement in the landscape industry.

To apply for the program client has to :
1.            Register with MicroSkills at any of our locations
2.            Meet with an intake counsellor to discuss her  employment goals, program eligibility criteria, and if there is a need and a match to be referred to the program

3 .Once referred to the program, client has to :
·         Attend an Information Session
·         Complete a Program Assessment (Microskills’ Math/English Assessment –(70 % to pass)
·          Participate in 2 interviews (One- on- one and  Panel  Interview)
·         Conduct an informational interview with a landscape company
·         Physical Test  and Math/English Assessment (Humber College)
