Good morning! Welcome to a week on the theme of transportation, and this week we'll be considering the topic of Driving in Ontario.

Study the above picture and caption, and share your thoughts with two partners.
Here are your tasks:
  1. Take 15 minutes to check out the government website on driving. Tell a partner what three things you learnt from the website that you did not know before.
  2. Role play with a partner: A Traffic Report
  3. Listen & write down sentences using new vocabulary from: A Traffic Jam.

  1. Choose two pictures from the field trip to put on your blog. 
  2. Write your report, focusing on the WH questions--who all went, what did he or she do, why did they do or not do that, how much did they spend, how long was the trip, etc. Publish your report on your blog
  3. Then comment or ask questions on three of your classmates’ postings.

Anyway, welcome back from the field trip! Here are your tasks for this morning:

  1. Check out the resources on our Good Morning page. Discuss with a partner which is your favourite.
  2. Check out 211 and make an enquiry with a partner using a phone (on speakerphone). Post your findings on your blogs.
  3. Tag yourselves in these pictures of the field trip. Interview at least three of those who went for their views of the field trip. Take good notes to write a report this afternoon.

Today, we check out our field trip destination for tomorrow and focus on resources in our neighbourhood.

  1. Check out the ship schedules here. What are the chances of seeing a ship on our planned field trip tomorrow?
  2. Don't forget to sign up! With a group of 3 to 4 partners, suggest and discuss other places of interest and activities around the Welland area.
  3. Practise by yourself, and then role play with a partner this conversation on selecting a neighbourhood.
  4. Locate five useful services provided by the community agencies in our neighbourhood. Ask your classmates what they found, and see if you came up with the same services.

  1. Listen to this conversation and discuss with a partner what this firm does. Then record your role play together on Vocaroo.com.
  2. What other community services are there? Learn the vocabulary from this lesson.
  3. Watch the latest posting of a Liveleak Freaks video on our FB page, and take dictation of 1:36 - 1:46, posting it to your blog. Then:
    1. Record your reading of the dictation on Vocaroo.com, making sure to place the stresses and high and low syllables where they belong.
    2. Place your comments on at least 3 Liveleak Freaks videos.

Welcome to a new week! The theme is on community and government services, and there is going to be a field trip on Thursday.


  1. Check out these settlement services and select three that are the most unexpected. Tell a partner about them.
  2. Have a look at this map in PDF. Locate (using Ctrl-F): the Niagara Escarpment, Lundy's Lane, and Welland Canal. Then look these up using Google. Discuss the differences with a partner.
  3. At 9:30 a.m. please go back to class for an Info Session on Community Services, by Shankari.

  • Pick-up: 9 a.m. from Don Mills Station Passenger Pick-up Area (on the Sheppard side of Fairview Mall)
  • Approx. return time: 5 p.m.

Take a look at this map. It's a whirlwind tour that would require adequate car pool resources. But what you will see will give you a good understanding of Canada's transportation, agriculture, tourism, environment, history, and other aspects of your new home and future.

Field Trip Wednesday: National Job Fair

The National Job Fair is held in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, and our class and Workplace English are going there on Wednesday.

The National Job Fair & Training ExpoPlease arrive by 10:30 a.m. for the first public presentation. Those leaving from Don Mills Station should leave by subway by 9:30 a.m., get off at St Andrew Station, and walk over to the convention centre. For detailed directions and timings, see this map. You might wish to meet with a few classmates or schoolmates and go there together.

Bring your resume (if you have one), good walking shoes, and about $5 for exhibition admission (if you would like to go in). Make sure to meet around 11:50 outside the public presentation room for a group photo. Best wishes on getting a job!

  1. Role Plays: Be sure to practise on your own (headphones on) and then work with a partner, speaking aloud on the following:
    1. Psychological Disorders
    2. Mental Disorders
  2. Google for the difference between a psychologist and psychiatrist, and publish the most helpful information.
  3. Using your library card, explore TPL's Tense Buster. Tell a partner what you like or don't like about the resource.
  4. To improve our mental and social health here, let's please roll up our sleeves after the break and do some area cleaning in the kitchen! Did anyone hear that?
